ESPN2 To Feature Pensacola Bay Area - Pensacola, Fla.– Oct.7, 2008 – The Pensacola Bay Area and the Pensacola Seafood Festival will be featured on ESPN2 as part of two 30-minute broadcasts of the 6th Annual Oh Boy! Oberto Redfish Cup tournament series. Part one of the three-day tournament held in Pensacola will broadcast at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11 on ESPN2. Pensacola Bay Area CVB Announces Photo Contest Winners - Pensacola, Fla. – Oct. 8, 2008 – Visitors and residents shared more than 200 vacation photos in the Pensacola Bay Area Convention & Visitors Bureau’s summer photo contest. Donna Mack of Gulf Breeze, Fla., was selected as the Grand Prize winner for her photo “Christmas Sunset on the Sound,” winning a weekend stay at Portofino Island Resort & Spa. Lanier Sailing Academy Named Outstanding Sailing School With Outstanding Instructor - Pensacola, Fla. – Feb. 13, 2008 – Pensacola’s premier sailing school has won top honors in a national survey of sailing school students by the American Sailing Association. Lanier Sailing Academy was named 2007 Outstanding Sailing School, and John Struchen was named 2007 Outstanding Instructor. There were 20 sailing schools selected from 350 nationwide and 30 instructors selected from a pool of 2,300, putting Struchen in the top 1 percent of sailing instructors nationwide. Pensacola Historic Building Inspires Films - Pensacola, Fla. – Feb. 11, 2008 – A building in Northwest Florida has played many roles — in life and on the big screen. The Old Sacred Heart Hospital, originally known as Pensacola Hospital, was Florida’s first Catholic hospital when it opened in 1915. Today it houses a school, several restaurants, private offices and a community theater. Film Shot Locally To Close Prestigious Film Festival - Pensacola, Fla. – Jan. 9, 2008 – “Permanent Vacation,” a film shot entirely in the Pensacola Bay Area, will be featured this month at Festivus, a Denver film festival known for showcasing some of the most off beat, independent films in the country. Netflix members can also add the black comedy to their queue to be shipped this spring. Oriskany Divers Generate $3.6 Million to Local Economy - Pensacola, Fla. – January 2, 2008 – A study by the University of West Florida indicates a $2 million annual economic impact on Escambia County from scuba divers visiting the USS Oriskany, the world’s largest artificial reef sunk off Pensacola in 2006. When the impact to Baldwin County, Ala., is added, the economic impact increases to $3.6 million. Pensacola Bay Area Recovering Quickly from Hurricane Dennis - Pensacola, Fla.–The Pensacola Bay Area is recovering quickly after a blow from Hurricane Dennis. The center of the storm made landfall as a category 3 hurricane with winds of 120 mph on Sunday, July 10 between Pensacola Beach and Navarre Beach. Already though, much of the region is returning to business as usual as power is restored all customers who lost it other than outlying areas on Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key Beach. Pensacola Steeped in Rich Military History - Long known as the “Cradle of Naval Aviation” for its role in training military aviators, Pensacola’s military history took root long before airplanes first crossed its skies. The city’s military history began when British and Spanish explorers established forts in the mid-1700s. In fact, the current site of Pensacola Naval Air Station began as a Spanish fort built in 1797. African-Americans Have Been a Part of Pensacola Ever Since its Early Days Under Spain - Many don’t realize that African-Americans were among the first non-Native Americans to set foot in what is now the United States. Some 100 Africans, most of them slaves, were brought by Spanish explorer Don Tristan de Luna in 1559, when he led a contingent of Spaniards to establish a settlement on what is now Pensacola Beach. His settlement was the first permanent settlement in the United States, but was destroyed by a hurricane shortly after their arrival and abandoned two years later.  Read more...
