Dive right in for the chance to explore the world’s largest artificial reef, an underwater archaeological preserve and natural limestone ledges that were formed around timber standing in prehistoric forests. Laid to rest 24 miles southeast of Pensacola Pass, the 911–foot USS Oriskany is the world’s largest artificial reef attracting divers from across the globe. Unique and challenging to divers of every skill level, the Oriskany’s superstructure is accessible just 78 feet down, the primary flight control is located at 95 feet and the flight deck at 145 feet. Visibility is commonly 60-100 feet.
According to Dr. Edwin Roberts Jr., former chairman of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the variety and quantity of marine life in Pensacola waters is comparable to, if not better than, the finest dive destinations in the world. Divers have the opportunity to swim with amberjack, tuna, wahoo and other popular game fish as well as tropical including butterfly fish, queen angelfish and a variety of damsels, chromis and blennies. Special sightings involve spectacular species such as Goliath grouper, slipper and spiny lobsters, moray eels and the occasional whale shark and ocean sunfish (mola mola).
