Feb. 27, "Mirror of Competing Claims: Exclusionary Violence and Jewish Equality in the German States"

This talk will explore the multiplicity of meanings behind the Haber Affair of 1843--a pair of duels and series of public events that captivated the German press for the better part of an entire year. At the center of the affair stands Moritz von Haber, a Jewish-German apostate and son of a Karlsruhe Court Banker, whose honor, masculinity and Germanness were at stake. The way that different groups and stakeholders in German society viewed Moritz von Haber reflected their actions and publications throughout the affair. As such, this affair had implications beyond benefits and consequences for one individual. The affair shows the contested nature of German societal leadership and the complicated nature of Jewish-German life within the fight for social integration, citizenship, and political equality (emancipation).
