Pensacola, Fla. (June 29, 2017) – Pensacola Bay Area visitors can now plan effortlessly for an all-encompassing vacation to the region. For those looking to explore more than the sugar white beaches, the Pensacola Bay Bridge Project will provide a more luxurious experience for travelers commuting from Pensacola Beach to the Pensacola metro area. Monday morning, the Florida Department of Transportation, Florida Governor Rick Scott, Mayor Ashton Hayward and several other government officials participated in an official groundbreaking celebration ceremony to mark the beginning of the project.

“We are seeing our tourism season grow which provides more work and business opportunities for those directly and indirectly in the tourism industry. The Pensacola Bay Bridge Replacement Project will meet the growing demand of combining a beach visit and the multitude of other activities our great city has to offer,” Visit Pensacola President Steve Hayes said. “The multi-use path and shaded observation points will provide a safe and enjoyable route for visitors to better view and appreciate Pensacola Bay and for those wishing to cycle from Pensacola to Pensacola Beach and beyond. This project will improve the visitor experience and as an effect will positively impact the tourism industry and that’s something we’re really excited about.”

Constructed in 1960, the current bridge is nearing the end of its anticipated lifespan. The new bridge is aimed to combat the approximate 55,000 daily traffic count, boasting three 12-foot travel lanes, inside and outside shoulders and a 10-foot multi-use pedestrian and bicyclist path on each side of the bridge.

“Having great infrastructure while focusing on beautification is incredibly important,” Pensacola Mayor Ashton Hayward said. “Beautification impacts economic development directly. This is an amazing collaborative effort that will continue the momentum in the Northwest Florida region,” Hayward said. “Efficient transportation and beautification efforts enables our economy to grow and this project will allow us to do that.”
