Pensacola Selected as Premier Sailing League Southern Headquarters; Exhibition Series to Take Place Jan. – April 2020
Pensacola, Fla. (Wednesday, Sept. 25) – Premier Sailing League (PSL) USA has announced that Pensacola has been selected as its southern headquarters and will host a series of regattas Jan. – April 2020.
Modeled after the European sailing league, Premiere Sailing League USA is the first national sailing league for America. The program is designed to increase awareness of the sport with an innovative approach to an annual series of regattas that starts with District Qualifications and then progress to National Finals that determine rankings in the PSL League. The format calls for short windward/leeward races with as many as 20 races a day on courses close to shore, providing sensational stadium-style entertainment for spectators ashore.
“Having a spectacle sailing league will continue to showcase Pensacola’s maritime opportunities and bring a new wave of travelers to the area,” President of Visit Pensacola Steve Hayes said.
The first PSL Winter Exhibition is scheduled for Jan. 3-5, 2020, off Plaza de Luna at the foot of historic South Palafox Place adjacent to the Pensacola Marina. Teams can charter a boat from the supplied fleet of identical RS21 keelboats for the racing. Spectators can watch the teams compete in multiple exhibition stadium-style races directly in front of the festive venues. Subsequent PSL Winter Exhibitions are currently planned for Jan. 31-Feb. 2, March 6-8 and April 3-5, 2020 (dates subject to change).
Pensacola is no stranger to sailing events but thanks to attention from American Magic, the destination is seeing growth in that area. Earlier this year, the New York Yacht Club’s team chose Pensacola to be its winter training base and will again return this November.
This past summer the area hosted Nationals for the United States Optimist Dinghy Association and the Flying Scot North American Championship. The destination will continue to host national and regional sailing championships in 2019 and 2020 including the Melges24 Atlantic and Gulf Coast Championship and next summer, the U.S. Sailing Youth National Championships will be in Pensacola.
