An Educational Vacation

There is more to take away from a visit to the Pensacola Bay Area than just seashells and sand dollars. Life-long learners and even little ones can take home a better understanding of our history, arts and culture with the unique, hands-on educational opportunities that our local museums and non-profits provide.

Some of our finest cultural establishments have been around for a long time, and their members continue to keep the passion for the arts alive. The Pensacola Little Theatre is the oldest continually operating theatre company in the Southeastern United States. The Pensacola Symphony Orchestra is entering its 90th season. Open for more than five decades, the National Naval Aviation Museum is the world’s largest naval aviation museum and one of the top 25 museums in the country.

So, educational opportunities abound in the Pensacola Bay Area, no matter your age, interest or season of travel.

Education for Kids

If you’re visiting over a weekend, chances are you’ll have the opportunity to pop in to one of the Pensacola Museum of Art’s classes for kids called “Saturday Studio Club.” Through fun art projects and discussion, instructors teach the seven fundamentals of art: color, value, texture, space, shape, line and form. Appropriate for kids ages 6-13.

Creative learning in an interactive and entertaining setting is exactly what you’ll find at the Pensacola M.E.S.S. Hall.  Children are encouraged to make a mess (pun-intended) with hands-on experiments that reinforce critical thinking and collaboration while exposing them to STEAM-Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

At the Pensacola Children’s Museum, the “Fun with the Arts” events expose children to arts and crafts. They can even get an introduction to the wonders of science during the museum’s “That Did What?” weekend events.

Or, if it’s instruments and sounds you crave, the Pensacola Symphony Orchestra offers a behind the scenes look where kids participate in one of the symphony’s matinee rehearsals in the beautifully restored Saenger Theatre.

Education for Adults

We’re never too old to learn, right?  Have an interest in learning more about a passion or hobby?  The arts community embraces the inquisitive and offers several opportunities for adults to do more than just soak up the sun while visiting.

Learn more about the visiting artists and artwork on display at the Pensacola Museum of Art during their year-round art lectures and workshops.  Become an artist yourself at the First City Art Center, a center for hands-on creation, where you can take a workshop in glass blowing, pottery, painting and more!

Celebrate and learn about the different peoples and cultures that have shaped the city of Pensacola when you visit VOICES of Pensacola multicultural center for lectures, film screenings and exposure to recorded stories from our past.  Make sure you search the events calendar as well to see dates and times for Pensacola Opera “Gallery Talks” and “Meet the Artists” luncheons.
