No trip to Pensacola is complete without a drive down historic 12th Avenue in the East Hill neighborhood. This one-mile loop could be considered a microneighborhood of the area—anchored by storied landmarks, local eateries, lively bars, and picture-perfect homes shaded by sprawling oak trees. It’s the kind of street that feels like it belongs on a magazine cover. Here’s your guide to what to see, eat, sip, and do along the way.

Kick off your 12th Avenue adventure at Celebrations the Florist, a true Pensacola institution. Far more than a flower shop, it’s a one-stop destination for gifts, weddings, and custom floral designs. And during the holiday season, you have to check out their Holiday House to get into the holiday spirit.

Historic Sacred Heart Hospital

Perhaps the most iconic landmark on 12th Avenue is the Historic Sacred Heart Hospital. Built in 1915 as Florida’s first Catholic hospital, it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. While it no longer houses doctors and patients, today the building thrives as a lively destination filled with restaurants and businesses.

One of its newest residents is The Burrow, a neighborhood biergarten and restaurant. Outside, you’ll find a lush courtyard with trees, picnic tables, and live music. Step inside, and the vibe shifts to a cozy castle-like den—perfect for settling in with a hearty meal and indulging in a handcrafted cocktail or a foamy lager.

For a quick and authentic taste of Italy, stop by A Mano Panino, known for its sandwiches on homemade ciabatta, layered with Italian cold cuts, cheeses, and fresh veggies. Just next door, its sister spot Lamonte Gelato serves some of the most authentic gelato in the country, made entirely from scratch. Pair a scoop with espresso—or go all in with an affogato—for one of Pensacola’s sweetest indulgences.

Pop into A Curious Wine Shop for a unique wine shopping experience, and if you’re still hungry, grab a pie from Ozone Pizza.

Across the street from the hospital, you’ll find Cordova Square, a large park that hosts the Pensacola Arts Market every 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month.

12th & Jordan Street Corner

On the corner of 12th Avenue and Jordan Street, you’ll find a charming cluster of local favorites. Start with J’s Bakery, one of Pensacola’s oldest businesses, delighting the community since 1946. From doughnuts and cakes to colorful petit fours and their iconic smiley face cookies, it’s the perfect stop to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Craving something savory? Step next door to East Hill Pizza for a scratch-made slice that’s especially hard to beat on a Friday night.

Head into Jitterbug Coffee for a caffeine boost! Indulge in some of their more unique espresso beverages like the Bees Knees, a cardamom-infused local honey latte. Their menu also includes plenty of gluten-free baked goods as they are a celiac-free kitchen. While waiting, wander into Revolver Records (tucked inside Jitterbug) and browse an expertly curated collection of vinyl.

Brews & Burgers

For those wanting a cold beer on 12th avenue, head to Alga Beer Company, where you’ll find a rotating lineup of craft brews and a lively, welcoming atmosphere. From festive events to fall football watch parties, Alga is a local favorite for gathering with friends.

Right next door, step into The Florida Room, Alga’s sister bar that channels pure 80s nostalgia. With its unmistakable Miami Vice vibe, this retro hangout serves cocktails made with house seltzers that taste like vacation in a glass (yes, piña coladas are on tap!).

And when hunger strikes, wander out to Alga’s back courtyard where the Brown Bagger food truck is serving up mouthwatering wagyu smashburgers that practically melt in your mouth.

There are several murals along 12th Avenue. Step outside and take a stroll - you'll see a few along the way. The iconic Pensacola Postcard mural is at Alga Beer Company. It's the perfect photo op to remember your time in Pensacola! The East Hill Plaza mural is located outside of Good Day Darling and Pensacola Pop Comics right on 12th Avenue. The General Daniel Chappie James Jr. mural is at the American Legion Post 193. Don't forget about the East Hill Wine Bar Mural as well!

Wellness and Natural Beauty

When you need to quiet the mind and slow down the day, pop into Golden Hour Yoga and Tea House. Take part in a yoga session or step inside their café for homemade kombuchas and organic teas.

No visit to 12th Avenue is complete without a drive through the iconic tree tunnel, where a canopy of century-old oaks stretches overhead. Planted at the turn of the 20th century, the avenue once served as the grand entrance to a large estate known as The Towers. Though the estate itself has disappeared, the oak trees endure.

Today, the shaded passage stands as both a local treasure and a picture-perfect example of Southern charm. While you're experiencing the tree tunnel and all it's beauty, you can stop in at Wisteria Tavern, nestled in the heart of the trees right on 12th Ave and snag a drink or two.

So when you need a break from the surf and sand, head over to charming East Hill and take a ride down 12th Avenue. It’s a short detour that offers a glimpse into the community’s history and everyday life.
