Know Before You Go: Tips for Visiting Pensacola Beach

Pensacola Beach was recently named America’s Best Beach by Conde Nast Traveler Readers in 2025, and for good reason. With our crystal-clear turquoise waters, sugar white sand beaches, beautiful sunsets, and a plethora of activities, it’s one of my favorite spots to be.

Before you arrive, we’ve put together an all-inclusive guide to tell you all the things you must know before visiting Pensacola Beach – parking information, beach safety essentials, public beach access points, and more - along with some of our favorite pro tips of course. Getting to Pensacola Beach

Pensacola Beach is located on Santa Rosa Island and is easy to get to. It’s minutes from downtown Pensacola, and a quick ride from the Pensacola International Airport, making it easily accessible. You’ll access Pensacola Beach by driving over the Bob Sikes Bridge, which connects Gulf Breeze to Pensacola Beach. Be sure and pack your patience, since traffic can be a little heavier during peak seasons like spring break or summer, particularly in the late morning hours.

Once you get over the bridge, there is a toll, but no need to stop there – it’s an electronic toll by plate. You’re then greeted by several restaurants, the Pensacola Beach Boardwalk, and the main beach area which is Casino Beach. Then you’ve got to decide where your day will take you – exploring the island or just getting your toes in the sand.

Getting Around Pensacola Beach

Now you're on Pensacola Beach - getting around is easy and part of the fun! One of my favorite ways to explore the island is hopping on the Island Trolley of course. It operates seasonally from Memorial Day through Labor Day and runs daily from 4 PM to midnight, with the last pickup happening at 11:30 PM. There are multiple trolleys that run during the evening hours, making it easy and fun to get to where you need to go. Check out the trolley map.

In addition to the trolley, Pensacola Beach is also very walkable and bike-friendly, so feel free to get some steps in or travel on a bike path on two wheels. Don't forget about Island Breeze Carts as well - their drivers will be delighted to pick you up and take you wherever you desire on the island.

Public Beach Access + Parking Information

My favorite part about Pensacola Beach is how much wide open public beach space we have to enjoy. With over 40 miles of beaches to explore there are plenty of public beach access points. Some of my favorite spots include Park East, Park West, Quietwater Beach, Casino Beach, and the two Dog Beaches. In addition to those spots, there are several areas down Fort Pickens Road and Via De Luna that you can park in a smaller gravel parking areas with direct beach access as well.

The great news? Parking is free at our beach access points on Pensacola Beach! Of course, arriving earlier in the day can help you secure your parking spot on Pensacola Beach.

Traveling with your furry friend? Be sure and visit one of our two dog beaches, perfect for enjoying the surf and sand with your pup. Remember, dogs must stay on a leash at all times, and owners should always clean up after their pets to help keep the beach enjoyable for all visitors.

Gulf Islands National Seashore

One of the best things about Pensacola Beach is that we have the Gulf Islands National Seashore to enjoy! Fort Pickens is located within the seashore and it is filled with miles of preserved and pristine coastline waiting for you to explore. Here, you can venture out onto miles of undeveloped beaches, spot wildlife, stroll along the seawall, bike scenic trails, camp, or explore the historic brick fort that dates back to the 1800s. There are really a ton of ways to spend time here.

It’s a definite must do when you’re out on the island, and it offers a quieter option while learning about Pensacola’s history. Keep in mind, there is an entrance fee for this but in my opinion it is WELL worth it for your visit.

Understanding our Beach Flag System

Now – safety always comes first. When venturing into the Gulf to go for a swim, it’s important that you are aware of your surroundings AT ALL TIMES! This means paying attention to our flag system and what they mean. Each day, there will be colored flags posted. You can check them out on Pensacola Beach Lifeguards or text PBFLAGS to 888777 to get them sent straight to your phone.

Larger Events

You might want to time your trip with a larger Signature Event that takes place on Pensacola Beach. I’m listing several good ones below that are always a big hit! Be sure to explore the dates for these if you’d like to plan your trip accordingly. My favorite event is definitely the Pensacola Beach Air Show hands down. It’s an iconic event that locals and visitors look forward to every year. Mark your calendar and PLAN AHEAD – that would be my biggest tip. But the events don’t stop there; there’s truly something going on that everybody can enjoy. Explore below.

What to Do Beyond the Beach – Eats, Shopping, Activities

When you’ve had enough of the surf and sand, there’s still plenty to do on Pensacola Beach. A popular spot is the Pensacola Beach Boardwalk. You’ll find several restaurants here like Papa’s Pizza, Senor Frog's, The Wharf, and more. There’s also several spots to go shopping like Ron Jon Surf Shop, Intracoastal Outfitters, and Envie to name a few. You can also access the sound side here at Quietwater Beach. Across the street on the Gulf side, you’ll find one of my favorite things to do, the Pensacola Beach Pier. This is the best way to go for a stroll, go fish, or look for wildlife. The views are my favorite here!

Another fun thing to do on Pensacola Beach? Go eat and drink, of course! There are several good spots to eat on the island, no matter your taste buds. Looking for a finer dining experience? Head to Grand Marlin, DRIFT, or Bonsai. If you’re in the mood for more casual and laid back, options include Flounder’s, CRABS, Casino Beach Bar & Grille, or Baja Coastal Kitchen.

And while you’re here, you can’t miss trying out a Bushwacker from the iconic Sandshaker. More than 50 years ago, Linda Taylor Murphy discovered a chocolaty frozen rum drink while visiting the Virgin Islands. She brought the idea back to Pensacola Beach and began experimenting with her own version at the Sandshaker. Today, grabbing a Bushwacker is practically a Pensacola Beach tradition.

Head to Bamboo Willie’s and Bounce Beach to keep the live music and good drinks going! A local’s favorite is Sneaky Tiki Bar – the perfect spot to snag a sunset cocktail.

Looking for some adventure? Try Glow Paddle at sunset. A crystal-clear glow kayak at night is one of the coolest experiences! At UFO’s you can do mini golf on the gulf – it's out of this world! Spotting dolphins is another fun activity onboard a dolphin cruise. There are plenty, so be sure to book ahead and enjoy. Hop onboard Condor Sailing and enjoy a daytime or sunset sail, it’s one of my favorite things to do to end my day. Thrill seekers might enjoy time at Laguna’s Adventure Park – try the ropes course or a water activity while you’re there.

There are so many options on Pensacola Beach. Hotels, vacation rentals, campgrounds, and RV parks all await you here! My personal favorite thing I like to look for is a place to stay with those Gulf views. You can’t beat waking up and walking out to smell that salty air and take in the view.
