Sweet Treats
When I was a kid, family gatherings in the summertime ended with fresh watermelon and homemade ice cream. I think this was true for many families, and it’s not a uniquely American experience either. In history, frozen desserts date back to ancient Chinese and Persian civilizations that are believed to have mixed snow with fruit and ice with fruit juices.
Fast forward to today, and not much has changed. On a hot summer day in Pensacola, there isn’t much better than enjoying a delicious frozen treat. From ice cream and gelato to snoballs and frozen lemonade, there are endless choices in every direction.
Fanny Lou’s, located off Cervantes Street in East Pensacola Heights, offers homemade ice cream with locally inspired flavors like Pelican Poo, Bushwacker, Graffiti Bridge and other seasonal flavors. Stop in for ice cream pies, sundaes, shakes, and dairy-free and gluten-free options, too.
Of course, don’t sleep on Marble Slab in the Cordova area. Cones, sundaes and more are made from small batch ice cream hand blended with your choice of mix-ins on a slab of marble.
Nolita’s Parlor & Eatery on Gregory Street has cones, cups and sundaes for every member of the family, and even pup cups for your pets. Just steps from the popular Palafox Market, held every Saturday, stop by Nolita’s for a tiramisu sundae and Mexican hot chocolate “magic shell.”
Open the door to the wafting aroma of freshly made chocolate at Peterbrooke, also on Palafox Street. The shop’s chocolate experts will gladly serve you a snack – choose from gelato, chocolate dipped pretzels and strawberries, popcorn, and truffles – or help you buy a memorable candy gift.
AJ’s Market & Ice Cream & Deli combines a deli and general store – think sandwiches, beer and lottery tickets – with a classic 1950s style ice cream parlor. AJ’s serves Hershey’s ice cream in cups, cones, sundaes, shakes and floats, and has vegan and dairy-free ice cream and shakes.
Premium Ice cream, fudge, caramel apples and gifts are available at Kilwin’s on South Palafox Street.
Kilwin’s also has a location on the boardwalk at Pensacola Beach. Many good boating and beach days end here for a sweet indulgence.
Also popular with beachgoers, Ice Cream Shoppe at Pensacola Beach has a menu filled with ice cream treats and nearly 20 varieties of truffles. Get your candy and taffy here or take home pints of your favorite ice cream flavors.
Ice cream is one of many other-worldly specialties at UFOs. The cosmic-themed entertainment center located near the Casino Beach parking lot has mini golf, an arcade and a party room for guests to enjoy.
Near the University of West Florida, head to Wild Honey Frozen Yogurt for your sugar fix. The self-serve frozen yogurt shop lets you fill your own cup. The expansive toppings bar includes sprinkles, candy, cereal, cookie dough and of course honey. There is even a giant ice cream cone here, perfect for photo ops.
Frozen Ropes Yogurt & Acai Bowls has self-serve yogurt and toppings galore. Gluten free and sugar free flavors are available, too. Plus, have you really lived until you’ve tried froyo nachos with dippable waffle cone chips?
