This year’s award winning talented troupe of Gulf Breeze High Theatre performers are bringing the musical ‘Matilda’ to the Saenger Theatre in Pensacola May 9 and 10. It’s a family-friendly stage show you won’t want to miss, and tickets just went on sale this week at the Saenger Theatre box office, and with Ticketmaster online.

The stage play is based on a children’s book by the same name. The show was first premiered with the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in 2010, and had its New York City Broadway debut in 2013. The story not only involves five-year-old Matilda, but some of her classmates who sometimes form a mutiny atmosphere – in song and choreography – against their private school teachers.

Sarah Rushing is playing the lead role of Matilda, and has been seen in several Gulf Breeze High Theatre productions over the past few years. She explains, “Matilda is the largest role I have ever had and I am so excited to portray this genius little girl! I played Margo in Bright Star, who owned her own bookshop and loved to read, which is wonderful because Matilda loves to read as well!

“Matilda tells beautiful and descriptive stories and has such a deep emotional understanding of life even though only being five years old. I love playing a little kid so much,” Rushing said. “Matilda reminds me of myself when I was little in some ways so it’s really a joy to ‘be a child’ again. I am a Junior in high school and I plan to perform for the rest of my life. There is nothing in the world better than the feeling of just being yourself and having fun on stage to make people happy and enjoy themselves. I think the biggest challenge I will face is creating the darkness that Matilda has inside her. She is so wonderful but she has been through so much. I will be doing a lot of mental exercises to make it seem as realistic as I can. I definitely want to do this little girl her justice! Matilda has taught me strength, and to never give up. I’m so excited for this beautiful production! The ensemble and cast is so talented, I’m more than ready to see them shine on stage by my side!”
