Fort George was a British fort built atop Gage Hill in 1778 for the protection of Pensacola from Spain during the American Revolutionary War. Named for King George III of England, the fort was the largest of a trio of fortifications on the hill, along with the Queen’s Redoubt and the Prince of Wales Redoubt. Fort George was located at Palafox and La Rua Streets and was surrounded by a dry moat. It was surrendered to Spanish forces under Bernardo de Galvez on May 8, 1781, during the Siege of Pensacola and renamed Fort San Miguel. The Spanish government never occupied the fort and it was allowed to deteriorate.
In 1976 in conjunction with the bicentennial, Fort George was restored as a revolutionary war memorial. Archeologists spent nine months excavating areas of Gage Hill, where Fort George was located. They unearthed elements of the British and Spanish forts, including a section of the moat, a powder magazine, and several vaulted rooms believed to be latrines.

Seville Square is the cornerstone for the Pensacola Historic District and the Seville Square Historic District which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It features a gazebo which is popular for weddings and other small gatherings, as well as benches, walking path and public art. Seville Square is home to some of the biggest festivals of the year, including the Pensacola JazzFest, Pensacola Seafood Festival and Great Gulfcoast Arts Festival. With plenty of shade and a cool breeze off the Pensacola Bay.
Interesting Facts:
Seville Square was the location of a 1752 outpost originally known as San Miguel. When the British took control of Pensacola, the area was laid out as a public square by Elias Dunford in 1764. The square originally extended from Palafox Street to Alcaniz Street and from the bay to Intendencia Street. When the Spanish assumed control again in 1813, the square was designated a public plaza and named for Seville Spain.
Early modern use of the square was as a ballfield and playground. The ballfield and playground were relocated in 1966 and a gazebo was constructed in preparation for the first “Evening in Old Seville” sponsored by the Pensacola Heritage Foundation. The event was briefly discontinued in 1972 but would be revitalized in coordination with the Galvez Bicentennial celebration in 1981. The event continued on again and was organized by various organizations until 2015.
William Bartram Park is named for William Bartram who was a botanist and naturalist who traveled around the southeastern states in the late 1700’s identifying the various flora and fauna, birds and bees of the region.
Bartram’s travels unintentionally brought him to Pensacola in 1775 and it turns out he thought Pensacola was the “bee’s knees” so he wrote about the hospitality he experienced during his brief visit in his book “Travels,” which was published in 1791. Two hundred years later a group of nature enthusiasts decided it was about time someone designated a nature trail in Pensacola in Bartram’s name. Many of the same plant species that were growing in Pensacola at the time of Bartram’s visit were cataloged along that trail.
Situated on Bayfront Parkway, today the park serves as a passive nature area with benches and picnic tables as well as a walking path. Informational signage related to coastal defenses, William Bartram Trail, as well as other memorial plaques and markers exist in this peaceful waterfront setting.
Interesting Fact:
William Bartram’s father, John Bartram was also a botanist and is credited with establishing the first botanical garden in America, and was the botanist to King George III.
